What the assessment actually measures

Readiness is not a feeling about technology. Six things determine whether an AI project lands, and the quiz samples all of them. The first two are where projects usually fail; the last two are where they quietly die six months later.

Data reality

Not whether you have data, but whether the data a specific workflow depends on is reachable, current, and trustworthy enough to act on. Most stalled projects die here rather than in the model.

Process clarity

If the team cannot describe the process consistently today, automating it will only accelerate the disagreement. We look for a workflow that is documented enough to be measured.

Ownership capacity

A named person who will own the workflow after launch, with actual hours available to do it. The single strongest predictor of whether an AI project survives its first quarter.

Commercial case

A measurable cost, revenue, or risk number the initiative moves — captured as a baseline before anything changes. Without a baseline there is no way to prove it worked.

Technical environment

Whether your systems can be integrated with reasonable effort, and whether anyone internally can maintain the result once the external help leaves.

Appetite and governance

Executive willingness to make decisions on incomplete information, plus enough policy clarity that staff are not afraid to use the tools you build.

How to read your score

The bands below are deliberately blunt. A high score is not a reason to skip scoping, and a low score is not a reason to give up — it tells you what to fix first.

80-100 — Ready to build

You have a defined process, a reachable data source, and someone to own the outcome. The risk now is choosing a first workflow that is too ambitious. Start contained, prove it, then scale.

60-79 — Ready with a narrow start

Enough to begin, but at least one dimension needs work alongside delivery — usually ownership or baseline measurement. Pick a workflow whose success does not depend on the weakest area.

40-59 — Foundation work first

You would likely spend implementation budget discovering that a prerequisite is missing. A short roadmap engagement that fixes data access and ownership is usually cheaper than a failed build.

Below 40 — Start with clarity

The honest answer is that AI is not your next move yet. Identify one process that causes measurable pain, map it properly, and reassess — you will get far more from that than from a pilot.

What you get afterwards

  • A ranked view of which dimension is limiting you most
  • The workflow type that fits your current readiness rather than your ambition
  • What to put in place before spending on implementation
  • A realistic expectation of what the first ninety days can achieve

The quiz is the cheap half of the answer. The expensive half is a facilitated review — interviews, an actual look at the systems, and a process walkthrough. If your score is borderline, that is usually what resolves it. See the cost breakdown for what that involves.

Where this fits

Use the assessment to decide between three next moves. If you are ready to build, go to implementation. If you have several competing ideas, you need roadmap consulting to rank them. If you need ongoing technical ownership rather than a project, read fractional AI CTO vs AI consultant.

Common questions

What is an AI readiness assessment?

An AI readiness assessment tests whether your business can successfully implement AI today. It examines data accessibility, process clarity, ownership capacity, the commercial case, technical environment, and governance — rather than testing your enthusiasm for the technology.

How long does an AI readiness assessment take?

This online quiz takes about five minutes and gives an indicative score. A facilitated assessment with your team, including interviews and a process review, typically takes one to two weeks.

What score indicates we are ready for AI implementation?

A score of 80 or above generally indicates readiness to begin with a contained first workflow. Scores of 60-79 suit a narrow start with one area strengthened alongside delivery. Below 60, foundation work usually returns more than starting an implementation.

Is this assessment vendor-agnostic?

Yes. The questions do not reference any product or platform. The output is a readiness score and a recommended first move, not a product recommendation.

Do we need an assessment before hiring an AI consultant?

It helps. Knowing which dimension is limiting you means the first engagement targets the real constraint instead of producing a broad strategy document that addresses everything and changes nothing.
